Facial rejuvenation using fat grafting (fat transfer) is a great option for patients wanting to remove excess fat from one area, such as the abdomen, and transfer it to an area in need of volume or correction. Common areas of the face that benefit from the transferred fat include fine and deep lines, as well as under the eyes and cheeks. Fat transfers to the face can also improve the appearance of irregular contours and scars. At his Houston office, board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Rafi Bidros, performs fat transfers for facial rejuvenation that restore the youthful contours and volume of the face with natural-looking results.

First, Dr. Bidros will perform liposuction to collect the excess fat cells. Next, the harvested fat cells are prepared and injected into the desired location of the face. Dr. Bidros will add slightly more fat than is needed to meet the patient’s goals to account for the small amount of fat that will be re-absorbed by the body.
Dr. Bidros prefers to perform your fat grafting under general anesthesia to keep you comfortable during your surgery. The results of facial rejuvenation using fat grafting are long lasting and will give you a more youthful appearance. Patients may have bruising and swelling for 1-2 weeks, but it can often be concealed with makeup after 1 week. As the bruising and swelling subsides, your results will become visible.

Fat Grafting FAQs
Fat grafting can be used in combination with facial fillers or alone to give the face a youthful appearance. Facial fat grafting can also be performed with wrinkle relaxer treatments to treat dynamic wrinkles on the face.
Since the amount of fat removed for the fat transfer is small, the liposuction incisions will be minimal and will be difficult to detect after proper healing. The fat injections into the face will not need incisions, so patients will not have to worry about any scarring on their face from the procedure.
During a successful fat transfer, the new fat will create a new line of blood supply to nourish itself and remain permanently. However, some fat may not take and be reabsorbed by the body, so patients may need touch up treatments over time.
