silicone and saline breast implants: What is the difference?

Breast size and shape are important factors in your treatment plan so be honest and open about your expectations when discussing this with Dr. Bidros. He will make implant recommendations based on your preferences as the implants need to be a good fit with your present breast anatomy, the elasticity of your skin, and your overall body type.

During your consultation, you will try on implants using our MENTOR® Volume Sizing System, which includes sizes ranging from 150 ccs to 775 ccs. This will give us a better idea of what you truly want in size and allow you to feel confident in your breast implant choice. Next, you will learn about the differences between saline implants, silicone implants, and fat transfers to help you decide which method is best for you.

Saline and Silicone Implants

  • Within a silicone shell, saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. The amount of solution will vary for each patient. The shape, firmness, and feel of the breast will be affected by the amount of solution in the implant.
  • Silicone implants are filled with an elastic gel that feels and moves much like natural breast tissue.
  • Most implant manufacturers offer an implant warranty program to give you protection against an implant rupture. If this occurs within ten years, they will assist in the costs of the revision surgery. Most offer, a lifetime warranty program, if you have an implant rupture at any time, will provide new implants. View MENTOR and Sientra’s warranty programs.

Fat Transfer

  • Fat transfers are becoming more popular in plastic surgery. We provide breast augmentation using fat harvested from one part of the body — usually the tummy, buttocks, or upper thighs — to increase the size or change the shape of the breasts. Dr. Bidros will perform liposuction under general anesthesia to collect the fat so that it can be injected into your breast area. This is also a technique we may perform during breast reconstruction following breast cancer to achieve symmetry in size and shape of the breast(s). The results of fat grafting to the breasts are immediate, natural, and long-lasting.

Am I A Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

The choice to undergo mammoplasty (breast augmentation) surgery is personal. If you are contemplating this procedure, it is essential you do it for the right reasons. You should be healthy and at a normal weight with breasts that are developed and be the proper age to have implants. If you are dissatisfied with the size and shape of your breasts because they appear shapeless, you could benefit from breast augmentation surgery. In addition, if your breasts have been affected by weight loss or pregnancy, this treatment can bring them back to life with increased volume. It is also a welcomed option if you weight train or have limited native breast tissue.

How are breast augmentation incisions made?

Dr. Bidros will provide you with a treatment plan that will include an incision that is placed in an inconspicuous area to minimize visible scarring. These incisions can be:

  • Inframammary (under the breast)
  • Periareolar (around the circumference of the areola)
  • Transaxillary (within the creases of the underarm)
  • No-Touch Technique

Dr. Bidros incorporates the use of the Keller Funnel (No-Touch Technique) during gel breast augmentations to decrease the risk of infection, as well as trauma to the breasts. It allows him to make a smaller incision, which reduces the risk of capsular contracture. For the majority of our patients, the No-Touch Technique using the Keller Funnel decreases the downtime during recovery.

Our staff will discuss these options with you during your personal consultation. Incisions also vary based on the type of implant, implant size, your particular anatomy, and your aesthetic preference.

How are breast implants placed?

Where to place the breast implant can be an important choice in affecting the final appearance of the implants. Newer techniques have surfaced that provide more choices for our patients. Some surgeons only utilize a single technique for every patient, but Dr. Bidros knows that every woman is different. He feels that patients should have an active role in determining what is best for them. The four positions in which breast implants can be placed are:

  • Beneath the breast tissue (sub-glandular pocket)
  • Beneath the sheet of connective tissue under the breast but over the pectoralis muscle (sub-fascial pocket)
  • With the top of the implant sitting under the muscle but the bottom of the implant is within the breast tissue (dual-plane technique)
  • Behind the muscle or its connective breast tissue (sub-muscular pocket)

How is Breast Augmentation Performed?

As discussed in your treatment planning session, Dr. Bidros will prepare you for surgery with general anesthesia. Each patient will have her own breast implant surgery customized to a unique incision technique, implant type, and implant placement. In recovery, you will be bandaged and taken care of by our post-operation nurses while being monitored closely until it is time for your discharge.

What Should I Expect Following Breast Augmentation?

Immediately after the surgical procedure is over, each patient will be taken to a private recovery space and carefully monitored before being released. You will then recover in the comfort of your own home following your surgery and return to our Houston, TX office the next day. Our patients generally return to work within 5 – 7 days of the procedure. They may resume strenuous physical activities and exercise in about 4 – 6 weeks (or when released by Dr. Bidros). The results of breast augmentation are immediately visible and typically appear high and swollen. However, this is normal and will settle into the desired position within weeks.

Breast augmentation FAQ

What is the difference between breast augmentation and a breast lift?

Breast augmentation alone does not correct breasts with severe ptosis (sagging breasts). It will be determined during your consultation if a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a combination of both is best for you. Dr. Bidros will examine you and discuss the possible need for a breast lift. If you want your breasts to have a perkier, more youthful appearance, a breast lift is required in conjunction with breast augmentation, which is called an augmentation mastopexy.

Which breast augmentation technique is right for me?

Each technique has advantages and disadvantages. Dr. Bidros takes into consideration the patient’s body type, breast shape, amount of existing breast tissue, skin thickness, athletic needs, concern about implant motion, and longevity. For example, if a patient has thin skin over the breast, a sub-muscular or dual plane would be optimal; if a patient has mild drooping of the breast, a sub-glandular or sub-fascial is more advantageous. And there are numerous factors to consider. That is why Dr. Bidros's experience and innovation are so important to help you make this decision during your consultation.

Can I breastfeed after undergoing breast augmentation?

Assuming you were able to breastfeed prior to your breast augmentation, you should have no problems. Your milk ducts are not affected during the breast augmentation procedure.

Will breast augmentation cause me to lose sensation in my nipples?

The loss of nipple sensation is uncommon; however, if you lose nipple sensation following your surgery, it will gradually return over time.
